Kingdom of Nri · 3/5

Soft power in practice

Peace markets, sacred taboos and the art of keeping order without an army.

1 min read

Nri’s authority worked through ritual isolation. If a community rejected an arbitration, the Nri priests simply withdrew. Without their cleansing, new titles could not be taken, major markets could not open and the agricultural calendar stalled. The fear of spiritual and economic isolation proved more effective than a standing army.

A kingdom that expanded by cleansing, arbitrating and blessing instead of conquering.
