Traditional Igbo religion, often called Odinani, recognizes Chukwu (“Great Spirit”), the supreme creator; Ala, the Earth goddess and guardian of morality; a host of alusi (deities and spirits); and the Chi, a personal spirit linked to each individual’s destiny. Ancestors remain active members of the community. Offences that harm the earth, such as bloodshed or incest, are alu and require ritual cleansing.
